Eugène Chavette (real name - Vachette; 1827-1902) - French writer and poet, younger contemporary and follower of Dumas, Gaboriau and Sue - the founders of the national school of adventure novel. In the 1870-1880s, his works were very popular in Russia. "Courtesan", "Fatal Inheritance", "On the Foggy Trail", "The Escaped Notary", "The Crime Room" - the very titles of these books promised secrets, fatal intrigues and dramatic events. An integral attribute of each novel by Chavette was a mystery that led the heroes through a series of dangers to a solution and denouement.
This edition presents the novel "Prosecutor Brichet", where the main intrigue is concentrated around the fate of a faithful servant of the law. His name is suddenly mentioned by a criminal sentenced to death, either by accident or deliberately slandering him as his accomplice. The subsequent disappearance of the prosecutor only deepens the mystery: either he fled, or was killed or kidnapped.
The events quickly become tangled, and among the hero's friends and relatives there are almost as many people who want to reveal the truth as those who are trying with all their might to hide it.
"Prosecutor Brichet" is a novel about secrets, slander and the search for truth, where the tension does not subside until the very last page.
