Herman Melville (1819-1891) was a 19th-century American author, novelist, and poet, best known for his masterpiece Moby Dick. Despite early success with works based on his maritime adventures, his later, more philosophical works were largely rejected by the public, and he died in relative obscurity, only to be rediscovered and celebrated in the 20th century.
