"Today, on the first day of Lent, you are going to make and eat your very own Dirt Cake," our teacher, Mr Wallaghy told us. "Ash Wednesday Dirt Cake, to be precise."

Josie's mouth dropped open and she began to look a little pale. "But I don't want to eat dirt."

"Is it going to have worms and bugs in it?" Jaxon asked.

"Yes, it'll have worms."

Josie lifted a hand to her forehead. She was pale and wobbly in her chair and looked like she was going to faint.

"That's cool!" Ryan grinned.

"No, that is not cool," I blurted out before I knew it. "I'm not eating dirt and I'm not eating worms. And I don't think anyone else wants to either."

"I do," Ryan continued.

I heard a clunk beside me and looked to see Josie in a crumpled heap on the floor.
