Zusammenfassung

A Novella.

The Echo Chamber was created to let people visit the past without changing it. For years, the Continuity Office believed they understood the rules.

Then they discovered the children.

Born to a handful of women who unknowingly traveled through the Echo Chamber while pregnant, the children grow up separated from one another, yet each begins describing the same impossible place. They call it the Playground.

One child knows when someone is lying. Another dreams of places she has never seen, only to discover they exist. Another sometimes finishes another child's thoughts. And one remembers events that never happened.

When the Continuity Office finally realizes the children are connected, it uncovers a disturbing truth: something happened to them inside the Chamber, something that should never have been possible. Worse, there are signs that the children may not be the only ones connected to whatever exists beyond ordinary time.

As the Office tries to understand the children before their unusual abilities attract dangerous attention, the children begin discovering that the Playground has rules of its own. There are places within it that should not exist, steps that do not lead where they should, and a mysterious figure who seems to have been waiting for them.

Some doors are meant to remain closed.

The children may be the first to discover why.

Alan Miller writes speculative science fiction and historical fiction that explores the intersection of ordinary lives and extraordinary possibilities. His stories often begin with a simple question: What if something we thought was impossible became possible?

His fiction combines time travel, technology, well-researched history, humor, and human relationships, with an emphasis on the choices people make when given the opportunity to step outside the lives they know. His characters are often ordinary people placed in extraordinary circumstances, discovering that the most important changes are not always the ones they expected.

His stories are part of the expanding Echo Chamber series; a connected universe built around the mysterious technology that allows carefully selected individuals to experience the past. Each story explores a different consequence of that technology, from historical adventures and personal second chances to the unexpected ways the past can reach back into the present.
